Puskas BAZNAS’s study tries to map zakat and poverty in three provinces located on the island of Java, namely West Java, Central Java and East Java.
Among the three provinces studied, West Java is the most populous province by number population of 51,096,908 people followed by East Java (40,108,769 people) and Central Java (36,653,667 inhabitants).
In terms of the number of poor people, the province of East Java has the highest number with 4,142,520 people followed by Central Java (3,897,334 people) and West Java (3,615,790 people). When analyzed from the total population of each province, Central Java recorded the highest percentage of poverty namely 11.2% while East Java and West Java have 10.3% and 7.3% respectively.
The study analyzes the number of mustahik and muzaki registered by OPZ in each city or district in these three provinces to explore the zakat aspect. The province with coverage the largest mustahik is West Java, which is recorded as having helped 15% of the total mustahik in the province.
Meanwhile, the other two provinces still have coverage under 10% with East Java (5.6%) and Central Java (4%). This means, only less than 10% of the estimated mustahik in the two provinces those who have felt the impact of zakat.
West Java Province itself has 18 Regencies and 9 Cities. Bogor Regency being the region with the highest poverty at 415,020 people covering 5.7% of poverty in West Java Province. For zakat, West Bandung Regency managed to help the mustahik with the highest number in West Java, namely 153,000 people.
West Bandung Regency is also the region with the highest registered muzaki which contributed 41% of muzaki registered in West Java, amounting to 454,823 people. Central Java Province consists of 29 districts and 6 cities. Brebes Regency becomes areas with the highest poverty, namely 309,170 people. In the zakat sector, Regency Karanganyar is the region with the largest number of registered mustahiks 17,167 people or contributing 21% of the total number of mustahik in Central Java.
The highest number of registered muzakki in the OPZ also came from Karanganyar with 10,681 people or 14.3% of the total muzaki in Central Java Province.
Finally, East Java Province consists of 29 Regencies and 9 Cities. Between cities or regency, Malang Regency occupies the first position as a region with the largest number of poor people, namely 268,490 people or 6.5% of the number of poverty in East Java Province. From the zakat data, Tuban Regency has been successfully registered became the region with the assisted mustahik with the highest number, namely 33,679 people.
Meanwhile, Malang Regency is the city or regency with the highest number muzaki is registered in East Java Province with a total of 11,000 registered mustahiks.
